Rabies Virus
If a veterinarian suspects a rabies case they should contact the CFIA immediately. They have special investigators trained in the proper procedures required in dealing with these animals.
-
The CFIA veterinarian investigates all suspected cases of rabies. Following positive cases, public health authorities are notified if the animal had contact with people.
-
The CFIA veterinarian also collects necessary samples from any animal suspected of the disease. These are sent to federal labs to be tested for the presence of rabies.
-
Further, any domestic animal is quarantined if there is a likelihood of having been exposed to rabies.
-
The CFIA also investigates incidents in which pet animals have bitten an individual.
